Costa del villas - Costa del Sol rentals may benefit as hotels close: "Costa del Sol rentals could benefit from winter hotel closures
Recent data released by Costa del Sol hotel unions has revealed that almost 40 per cent of hotels in the region may be forced to close for the winter due to a lower demand from holidaymakers.
The Costa del Sol has typically been a year around destination with a peak in the key summer months of July and August. Whilst that trend continues the proportion of holidaymakers visiting the Costa del Sol in the winter months appears to be falling.
This year 20,000 fewer visitors are expected in the south of Spain resulting in 5 per cent more hotels planning to close compared to 2009. The figures however don’t show the full story as some hotel chains plan to close only some of their hotels whilst keeping others open in an effort to reduce operating costs.
José Carlos Escribano, President of the Costa del Sol Hoteliers Association, commented on the situation “A drop in occupancy was noted at the end of the summer, and it does not seem that there is any view of a good winter”."
