Dodgy gold gang target M74 drivers - Evening Times | News | Editor's Picks: "Brazen scam artists are targeting Lanarkshire drivers and duping them into buying worthless fake gold jewellery.
The organised crime gang has already conned two drivers into paying £100 for the “gold” tat with a sob story about being stranded without enough petrol money to visit a sick relative.
Motorists have been targeted on the southbound slip road at Canderside Toll, junction 8 of the M74, in Larkhall.
Police have warned people to be on their guard and report any similar occurrences.
In the first incident, last week, a man in a silver Mercedes Benz E-Class, parked on the slip road, flagged down a driver at 2.15pm.
He told the driver he had run out of petrol and needed money for fuel to visit his sick father in Manchester.
He then offered gold jewellery in exchange for £100, but this turned out to be worthless.
A short time later, another motorist was stopped on the slip road, also by a man in a silver Mercedes Benz E-Class, and told a similar story. The man showed him a Turkish ID card and jewellery.
The driver gave him £100. The man then jumped into his car and was driven away by another man.
The Mercedes has a registration plate with the prefix “N”.
It’s believed the same gang has been targeting people as they leave Bothwell Services on the M74.
Sergeant Claire Campbell, of Hamilton Community Safety, hopes more members of the public come forward to identify the crooks."
